Genicular Nerve Block & Radio Frequency
Ablation for Knee Pain

If you’ve tried traditional conventional treatment for your chronic knee pain that has been ineffective, this new alternative may be your solution.

Genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation can address chronic knee pain stemming from conditions such as osteoarthritis, failed knee replacements, patients unsuitable for knee replacements due to medical reasons, and individuals opting to avoid knee replacements.

Genicular Nerve Block

Patients with chronic knee pain that has failed to respond to conservative care may be candidates for a genicular nerve block. A Genicular nerve block is a procedure where these nerves are anesthetized (“blocked”) with local anesthetic injected through small needles. The procedure is performed with live x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) to ensure proper needle placement. It generally takes 5 to 10 minutes for the procedure.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Patients with a positive response are offered radiofrequency ablation for a more sustained response. This involves creating a heat lesion around the genicular nerves which disrupt the painful impulses to transmit from the knee joint.

Step 1 – Diagnostic Genicular Nerve Block:

The initial step involves a diagnostic genicular block wherein the nerves presumed to be causing pain are temporarily numbed or blocked. This procedure aims to ascertain if these nerves are indeed responsible for the pain. The relief provided typically lasts approximately 5-8 hours.

Step 2 – Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation:

Radiofrequency (RFA) Ablation can be undertaken to provide enduring relief. This procedure involves the use of a specialized needle that emits heat, effectively burning or disabling the nerves associated with the joints. The ablation disrupts pain signals originating from the nerves, typically offering relief for over 6 months.

What are the potential risks and side effects?

The risks and side effects associated with the procedure are minimal, and serious complications are rare. We prioritize safety by taking every precaution. Potential risks may include, but are not limited to: a vasovagal response (fainting), new or heightened pain, infection, bleeding, permanent changes to the skin, allergic reactions, unexpected drug reactions with varying degrees of severity, and unintended nerve injury.

Enhancement

To further enhance your joint health, we incorporate the use of advanced orthobiologics and regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC). These innovative treatments are meticulously administered inside the joint capsule, offering multiple benefits. Not only do they slow down the further degradation of your joints, but they also have the potential to restore the integrity of damaged hyaline cartilage.
