As summer unfolds, the rising temperatures and humidity significantly increase the risk of heat-related conditions, including heat exhaustion and more severe heat stroke. Recognizing the symptoms and knowing how to prevent these hazards are crucial to staying safe.

Heat Exhaustion: Spot the Signs, Take Action

Symptoms of heat exhaustion can be subtle but important:

  • Persistent Headaches

  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Excesive sweating
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Muscle cramps

Respond immediately by:

  • Rehydrating with water or sports drinks rich in electrolytes.

  • Seeking out a cooler, air-conditioned environment.

  • Resting and slowly sipping water if consciousness is fully retained.

  • Using cold compresses and taking a cool shower if possible.

  • Seeking medical attention if symptoms persist or vomiting occurs.

Heat Stroke: Classic and Exertional Types

Classic heat stroke is often found in pre-pubescent and elderly individuals, primarily due to an inability to expel body heat effectively. The scenario gets even riskier if these individuals are chronically ill or lead sedentary lifestyles.

On the other hand, exertional heat stroke is associated with strenuous physical activity and can strike athletes, laborers like firefighters or agricultural workers, and others engaged in intense physical tasks.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Persistent headaches

  • Reduced or absent sweating

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Elevated heart rate

  • Body temperature exceeding 104°F

  • Employ cold-water immersion or use ice packs, or cold packs to facilitate cooling.

Prevention: Your Best Defense

Proactive preventive measures include staying in air-conditioned environments, taking frequent cold showers, limiting physical activity during peak heat times, and maintaining proper hydration. Regular wellness checks by family members or neighbors can help ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.
